Rhyme recognition is the earliest phonological-awareness skill: hearing that cat and hat share an ending, then producing a third word that fits. It sits before letters entirely — a child can rhyme without knowing a single grapheme — and it is taught in Pre-K and Kindergarten, usually through songs and picture sorts before any pencil work. The errors you will see are predictable. Children match on the first sound instead of the last (cat / cup), match on meaning (cat / dog), or accept any two words that feel similar in length. Some hear the rhyme perfectly but cannot generate one on request; that is a retrieval problem, not a hearing one, and picture supports fix it. These worksheets move from recognition (circle the two that rhyme) to production (finish the rhyme), and the Rhyme Match game gives the same practice with audio, so a child who cannot yet read the words still gets the sound work.

At what age should a child be able to rhyme?

Most children recognise rhymes at 4 and produce them at 5. If a 6-year-old cannot hear whether two words rhyme after a term of practice, that is worth a closer look at phonological awareness generally.

Do rhyming worksheets need to be read?

No — every item is picture-based, and the words are for the adult. Say the words aloud; the child listens and marks.
