Short and long vowel sounds are the pivot of early phonics: the same letter a says something different in cat and cake, and every later pattern (silent e, vowel teams, r-controlled) is a way of marking which sound it is. Short vowels are taught in Kindergarten, long vowels with their spellings across Grade 1 and Grade 2. Errors are mostly confusion between the short vowels themselves — e and i (pen / pin), a and o (cat / cot) — and defaulting to the letter name for a long sound regardless of spelling. Which vowel sounds are taught first?

The five short vowels, usually in the order a, i, o, u, e. Long vowels come with their spellings in Grade 1 and 2.

Why do children confuse e and i?

The two short sounds are close in the mouth. A keyword picture for each (egg, igloo) and exaggerated mouth shape help more than more worksheets.

What does 'long vowel' actually mean?

The vowel says its letter name: a as in cake. It is a description of the sound, not of the letter's length.
