Loud Syllables, Quiet Syllables
Grade 4
Name:
Date:
Score:
In every longer word, one syllable is said louder and longer — the stressed syllable: ba·NA·na. The quiet syllables often shrink to a lazy 'uh' sound called schwa — that's why the as in ba·NA·na don't sound like the middle one.
Examples: potato → po·TA·to · guitar → gui·TAR · hospital → HOS·pi·tal
Say each word naturally. Rewrite it split into syllables and CAPITALISE the stressed one.
