Segmentation is the step after counting: not just how many beats, but where the word splits — rab/bit, um/brel/la. It is taught from Kindergarten with compound words (cup/cake), through Grade 2 with the VC/CV rule, to Grade 3 with the harder V/CV versus VC/V decision. It is the skill that lets a reader attack a long unfamiliar word instead of guessing from its first letters. Errors cluster around doubled consonants (splitting rabbit as ra/bbit), consonant blends (breaking st or tr apart), and the -le ending. Children also over-apply one rule once they learn it. These worksheets show the word and ask for the break; the Jump & Split game asks the child to place the break themselves and shows the correct split immediately, which is the feedback loop that actually moves this skill.

By the end of Grade 2: Names all 6 syllable types; divides and spells regular 2-syllable words.

What is the VC/CV rule?

When two consonants sit between two vowels, split between the consonants: rab/bit, nap/kin. It is the first division rule taught, in Grade 2.

Do you split consonant digraphs and blends?

No. sh, ch, th and blends like st stay together: fish/ing, not fis/hing.

How is this different from counting syllables?

Counting is hearing how many beats; segmenting is deciding where the written word breaks. Counting comes first and is auditory; segmenting is where reading the word begins.
