The six syllable types — closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, vowel team, r-controlled and consonant-le — are the map a reader uses to know what a vowel will say in a chunk of a word. Closed and open come in Grade 1, silent e too; vowel teams, r-controlled and consonant-le fill Grade 2; Grade 3 uses all six to divide and decode three- and four-syllable words. This is where phonics stops being letter-by-letter and becomes pattern recognition. Errors are about labelling: calling a vowel team a closed syllable because it ends in a consonant, missing that r changes the vowel, treating silent e as a sound. Colour-coding and sorting real words by type are the standard drills. These worksheets sort and label; the spelling games tag each level by its pattern, so a child's results tell you which type is the weak one.
