Blending is running sounds together into a word: /m/ /a/ /p/ becomes map. Onset-rime blending (c + at) comes first, in Kindergarten; phoneme-by-phoneme blending follows and is the core of early decoding. A child who segments but cannot blend can name every sound in a word and still not read it. Watch for children who add a vowel to consonants (muh-a-puh), who blend the last two sounds and forget the first, or who say the sounds and then guess a word that starts the same way. Continuous blending — stretching each sound into the next without pausing — fixes most of it. These worksheets present sound boxes and picture choices; the games play the sounds aloud and ask for the word, so the child hears the blend rather than reading it.

By the end of Kindergarten: Counts syllables in 1–3 syllable spoken words; blends CVC words.

What is the difference between blending and segmenting?

Blending puts sounds together into a word (/m/ /a/ /p/ → map); segmenting takes a word apart. Children need both, and blending is the one that produces reading.

My child says every sound but cannot say the word. Why?

Usually a pause between sounds breaks the word. Practise continuous blending — stretch each sound straight into the next without stopping.

Should blending practice use real words only?

Mostly, at first. Nonsense words are useful later to check the child is blending rather than recognising.
